Women Empowerment

Empowering women and promoting gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it also has a multiplier effect across all other development areas.

Women empowerment leads to increased participation in all aspects of social, health, education and nutrition. Thus SUN Alliance strengthens the coordination between nutrition actors to implement nutrition intervention programs by empowering women as key players in the campaign to end malnutrition.

Since establishment, the Alliance has over the years been advocating for and communicating with Civil Society organizations and other nutrition actors implementing nutrition programs to;

  1. Incorporate clear women and girls’ empowerment objectives in the design of nutrition policies, strategies and programs, showing how women and adolescent girls contribute to improved nutrition.
  2. Accelerate funding for nutrition-sensitive approaches while strengthening the implementation capacity of women and adolescent girls as key nutrition actors including at local levels.
  3. Ensure that women and girls embrace efforts to improve dietary practices within their families as a standard part of eliminating malnutrition.
  4. Track and seek to avoid any potentially negative impact of nutrition interventions programs on gender equality.

Gender and nutrition are not stand-alone issues with some experts considering women to be the nexus of agriculture, health and nutrition sectors. It is also noticeable that when women’s incomes rise they tend to invest more in the nutrition, education, and health of their family, causing a ripple effect that can benefit entire communities.

This infers therefore, SUN Alliance Rwanda recognizes the role women and adolescent girls  can play in improving health and nutrition among children, which is why it focuses on women empowerment by tracking results and aligning strategies, programs and resources of its members with country plans to eliminate all forms of malnutrition.
